Women are sometimes embarrassed to discuss vaginal tissue concerns, even with their doctor. They may assume it’s just a factor of aging and childbirth and that they have to live with the uncomfortable symptoms. But, solutions are available for the many women who experience vaginal laxity and tissue degeneration.
During vaginal birth, the head of the baby stretches and tears the tissue of the vagina when passing. While every woman experiences some stretching during vaginal birth, the severity of the tissue damage depends on variables such as:
- Duration of labor
- Size and position of the baby
- Genetic nature of your tissue
Some women have vaginal and pelvic tissue that is quite elastic and stretches easily. Other women, however, have relatively inelastic tissue that can tear and deform permanently during birth.
If women with inelastic tissue have multiple vaginal births, they end up with vaginal walls that are stretched and torn. These women may even experience uncomfortable vaginal prolapse, which means the tissue can no longer support pelvic organs, and they protrude out of the vagina.
